Monte Carlo delivered a Monaco Grand Prix that felt scripted for maximum drama, with seven retirements, a red flag, a standing restart, and a penalty frenzy that collectively rewrote the finishing order before a single trophy had been lifted. Through every eruption of chaos and every twist of the safety car, one driver remained entirely untouchable, and Kimi Antonelli converted pole position into a fifth consecutive victory to leave behind a championship picture that looks starker than it has at any point this season.


Kimi Antonelli is pulling away from the field

At just 19 years old, Kimi Antonelli has now won five Formula 1 races in a row, and he has done it on the streets of Monaco, a circuit that historically punishes any lapse in focus and rarely rewards drivers who have not fully earned their place at the front. George Russell's season is unravelling at the worst possible time

If Monaco had a single villain of circumstance, it was George Russell, whose afternoon unravelled through a combination of bad timing and a pit lane error that turned a minor infringement into a race-ending catastrophe. Lando Norris added his name to the list with a power unit failure of his own on lap 45, while four drivers from four different teams were each handed penalties for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by 0.1 km/h, a margin so small it barely registers as human error. With ten laps remaining, the track surface gave way at the final corner and triggered a red flag and a standing restart, the kind of lottery Monaco has no right to stage and yet somehow always finds a way to produce. Seven retirements, penalties scattered across the grid, and a red flag meant that Monaco 2026 was less a Formula 1 race and more a survival exercise.


Charles Leclerc's Monaco curse just wrote its cruellest chapter yet

Charles Leclerc arrived in Monaco carrying the full weight of a complicated history at his home race, having already had a difficult qualifying session and been forced to fight back from a compromised starting position. He had done enough to run in the points when Ferrari stacked him behind Lewis Hamilton in the pit lane during the safety car window, forcing Leclerc to sit stationary while Hamilton served his five-second time penalty and watching the gap to the podium evaporate with nothing he could do about it. When the standing restart came, Leclerc was third, a position he had clawed back from almost nothing, and then on the formation lap he put his Ferrari into the wall. Not under racing pressure, not in a wheel-to-wheel battle, but on his home streets with the race still ahead of him. His record at the Principality now sits at one win from eight attempts, and the 2026 chapter did not merely continue the curse; it found a way to make it worse.


Isack Hadjar is becoming exactly what Red Bull needed him to be

While his teammate was stranded on the grid and the race dissolved into carnage around him, Isack Hadjar drove with the composure of someone who had been doing this for years rather than months. He avoided the bulk of the lap-one chaos, fended off pressure from multiple rivals in the early stages, read the safety car windows correctly, and held his nerve through the standing restart while drivers with far more experience made costly errors around him. He crossed the line third to take his first Formula 1 podium, and when his radio message came through, the disbelief in his voice felt entirely earned. Red Bull signed Hadjar because they needed someone to develop into a championship asset over time, and what Monaco showed is that the development may be happening considerably faster than anyone expected.


The circuit moves to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya next weekend, where the new-generation cars will face a very different challenge in the form of high-speed corners and a track that historically rewards raw pace over street-circuit survival instincts. After the mayhem of Monaco, Barcelona should bring a more straightforward weekend, and Antonelli will arrive carrying momentum that no other driver on the grid can currently claim to match.
